Nho Quế River is one of the most enchanting destinations in the Hà Giang stone plateau. Alongside the iconic Mã Pì Lèng Pass and the breathtaking Tu Sản Canyon, it offers an unforgettable journey for every traveller.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a stunning natural landscape that feels like a scene from a fairy tale, where mountains and rivers harmoniously intertwine.

Originating from the Nghiễm Sơn mountain range in Yunnan Province, China, the Nho Quế River stretches nearly 200km, with around 50km flowing through Việt Nam. It begins its journey in Xéo Lủng Village, Lũng Cú Commune and meanders through the dramatic terrain of Đồng Văn District, eventually passing through the captivating Tu Sản Canyon and into Mèo Vạc District. Here, the river cuts through towering cliffs and winds around the majestic Mã Pì Lèng Pass, making it a prime attraction in Hà Giang.

The river is renowned for its emerald green waters, which shimmer throughout the year, creating a picturesque landscape that is hard to find elsewhere. Visitors can explore Nho Quế River any time of the year, but it is particularly magical in the colder months when the chill in the air and the mist enhance the area's wild and mysterious allure.

For those seeking adventure and flexibility, renting a motorbike is an excellent way to navigate the journey from Hà Nội to Hà Giang, which is approximately 300km away. The route features numerous mountain passes, steep inclines and narrow bends, requiring a skilled hand on the handlebars.

However, if it’s your first visit to Nho Quế River, embarking on a boat tour is highly recommended. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery. There are two boat docks to choose from: Tà Làng, which is convenient for visitors starting from Đồng Văn Town, and Xín Cái, accessible from the top of Mã Pì Lèng Pass.

The stretch of Nho Quế River flowing through Tu Sản Canyon and Mã Pì Lèng Pass boasts some of the most spectacular and poetic vistas. As you glide along the turquoise waters, you can admire the Tu Sản Gorge, known as the most majestic pass. This gorge features a unique geological structure, recognised as the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia, plunging up to 1,000m. Navigating through this canyon, you’ll be awestruck by the steep cliffs that seem to touch the sky, with the cool, crystal-clear waters inviting you to reach down and experience their refreshing touch.

Vàng Mí Sá, a seasoned boat driver, said: "I've been navigating these waters for about six years. Each day, I take about three trips, guiding visitors along the river and stopping at Tu Sản Canyon for photographs. Foreign tourists absolutely love it here."

Boating on the Nho Quế River evokes a sense of relaxation and tranquility. Ngân Hà, a tourist from Hà Nội, expressed her awe: "My first visit to Hà Giang was overwhelming. The scenery is majestic and poetic, but Nho Quế stole my heart with its jade-green waters surrounded by mountains. It feels incredibly peaceful and romantic. If I return to the northwest, Hà Giang will be my first destination."

Not only do domestic tourists flock to Hà Giang, but international visitors are also drawn to the river's beauty. Moises Perez Mokk, a tourist from Cuba, remarked: "This place has left a lasting impression on me. The scenery is stunning and captivating. In my country, we have many beaches, but not many rivers like this. I would love to return to Hà Giang."

Over time, Nho Quế River has retained its vibrant green hue, enhancing the beauty of the rocky plateau and serving as a vital source of life for the communities along its banks. Today, visitors can enjoy not only river cruises but also kayaking, homestays and riverside restaurants that offer unique local dishes.

For a convenient visit to Nho Quế River and nearby attractions, staying in Đồng Văn Town is advisable. The services here are well-developed, primarily featuring homestays that provide a cozy and immersive experience for travelers.
