These days, Vũ Văn Kiên, a dedicated martial artist in pencak silat, is training intensively at the National Sports Training Centre in Hà Nội, his sights firmly set on gold at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand.

The sweat streaming down his face is not just a sign of effort: it embodies his unwavering determination to secure victory.

“My entire team and I are laser-focused on refining our tactics, techniques, and physical conditioning as we gear up for the SEA Games,” Kiên told Việt Nam News.

At 27, Kiên may no longer be the youngest contender in the 60kg class, but he remains one of the most tenacious. The upcoming SEA Games in Thailand marks not just another competition, but what he believes could be his last–and best–chance to complete his medal collection with a long-awaited gold.

“This is my fourth SEA Games. In previous years, I brought home silver and bronze medals. Now, this could be my final shot at gold, and I'm more determined than ever to finish my SEA Games journey on a high note,” Kiên said.

Although he hasn't yet claimed a SEA Games gold, his trophy case boasts a series of significant victories, including gold at the 2022 and 2024 World Championships, gold medals at both the 2022 and 2025 Asian Championships, as well as National Championship titles from 2019 to 2023.

“The gold medal from the 2024 World Championship has bolstered my confidence and equipped me with invaluable experience for the SEA Games,” he explained. “Winning against an opponent who bested me before makes this title especially meaningful. Every athlete dreams of winning at the SEA Games and a world championship. Securing gold here would be the ultimate closure to my proud athletic journey.”

In a showcase of his character, Kiên plans to auction the medal and donate the proceeds to aid those affected by floods if he wins gold at the SEA Games.

A lifelong calling

Kiên’s love for martial arts ignited in childhood. His supportive parents recognised his talent early on, paving the way for him to pursue a professional career. Kiên's journey began in 2013, when a friend introduced him to coach Long in a gifted class. After a few trial sessions, he secured his place in the team, stepping into the world of formal training.

But the path of a young athlete, away from home, was fraught with challenges. In those early days, the loneliness often brought him to tears after training. However, over time, he adjusted to the demanding lifestyle, emerging stronger and more resilient.

Just two months after joining the gifted team, Kiên debuted at the 2013 National Youth Championship in Tuyên Quang, earning a bronze medal. Two years later, he clinched his first national youth gold, a victory achieved through relentless dedication and even shedding weight to meet the 48kg limit.

Reflecting on his career, Kiên holds immense gratitude for coach Nguyễn Văn Hùng, who mentored him through crucial developmental phases. Transitioning from the 55kg to 60kg category between 2017 and 2018 brought significant challenges, leading to a temporary stagnation in his performance.

However, by 2019, as his body adapted, he made a triumphant return, winning his first national championship gold in the new weight class, a defining moment that solidified his position on the national team.

From 2019 to 2025, Kiên experienced a stellar period of achievement, racking up titles as national, Asian and world champion. Yet, his journey was not without hardship. The 31st SEA Games held at home brought immense pressure, resulting in a disappointing performance and marking one of the most challenging moments in his career.

Instead of succumbing to defeat, Kiên turned his pain into motivation. This resilience bore fruit at the 2024 World Championships, where he earned what he calls “the most valuable medal of my life”, triumphing over the Indonesian athlete who had bested him in previous matches.

In 2025, he further established his dominance by winning the Asian Championship, earning the Vietnamese State's prestigious Labour Order, Second Class, for his achievements.

Coach Hùng describes Kiên as one of the most seasoned athletes on the current team, with strengths including diligence, refined technique, and rich competitive experience.

The men’s 60kg class at the SEA Games is notorious for its fierce competition, particularly from the host nation, Thailand. Yet, Kiên embraces the challenge.

“I yearn to conquer obstacles, to fully immerse myself in my passion. I will strive with every ounce of strength to bring home that gold medal,” he said. VNS
