HCM City win team title in national southern regional karate championships

HCM City won the overall championship at the 4th Southern Regional Karate National Championships that wrapped up in Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province on April 6, securing a total of 21 gold, 14 silver, and 13 bronze medals.

BÀ RỊA-VŨNG TÀU — HCM City won the overall championship at the 4th Southern Regional Karate National Championships that wrapped up in Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province on April 6, securing a total of 21 gold, 14 silver, and 13 bronze medals.

The championships, held at the Sports Arena in Vũng Tàu city, are a prestigious sporting event that drew top karate talent from across the southern region.

On the final day participnts competed for medals in the boys’ individual kumite (30kg, 35kg, 40kg, 45kg, over 45kg – ages 10-11), girls’ individual kumite (30kg, 35kg, 45kg, over 45kg – ages 10-11), and team kumite for both men and women athletes aged 15-17 and over 18.

In the final rankings, Đồng Tháp were second with 14 gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals, followed by Bình Dương with six gold, five silver, and 12 bronze medals.

This year’s event attracted over 400 competitors and coaches from 15 provinces and cities.

Competitions were held in two main disciplines, kata (forms) and kumite (sparring), across four age groups (10–11, 12–14, 15–17, and over 18), with 74 medals at stake.

Vũ Sơn Hà, head of the karate division at the Việt Nam Sports Administration and president of the Southeast Asian Karate Federation, said: “The event is a foundation for national teams preparing for national and international competitions.”

It featured a number of intense and emotional matches, particularly the finals, where athletes vied not only for medals but also personal and team pride, he said.

“Beyond encouraging public interest in sports, the tournament also helped identify and nurture young talent for Vietnamese karate.”
