HÀ NỘI — Striker Nguyễn Xuân Son underwent surgery for an injury sustained during the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup final at Vinmec Times City International Hospital in Hà Nội on Monday evening.

After thorough examinations and consultations with specialists, doctors concluded that Son's injury was more severe than initially assessed. The evaluation revealed a complex closed fracture involving two large separate pieces of the tibia bones.

The medical team at Vinmec opted for closed bone fusion surgery using an intramedullary nail, a minimally invasive technique designed to limit soft tissue damage and promote rapid recovery.

“Son’s injury was quite serious, featuring two large distinct fractures - one measuring 7cm and the other 3cm. To facilitate a swift recovery, particularly regarding bone healing, we employed a closed intramedullary nailing technique. This method ensures the integrity of the anatomy, prevents displacement of the fractured pieces and avoids exposing the fracture site.

"The surgery was closely monitored using a C-arm machine to meet the anatomical requirements, correction, and fixation. I am pleased to report that the surgery was a great success,” Professor Dr Trần Trung Dũng of Vinmec said.

It is anticipated that Son will begin practicing and moving about using crutches very soon.
