ĐÀ NẴNG — Police in the central city of Đà Nẵng rescued two foreign tourists, an American and a German, on Wednesday after they spent a night lost in forested mountains.
Austin Drake Vasquez, 31, and Matty Geppert, 36, had been missing in the Suối Đá Hang area of Bà Nà Commune since Tuesday evening. Bà Nà police received a report at about 9am on Wednesday and, working with other forces, immediately launched a search.
After about three hours of combing the forested terrain, the teams found the pair at around noon in the Hang Gió area of Suối Đá Hang and escorted them down the mountain. Initial checks showed both were in stable health, with only minor scratches.
Both tourists later wrote letters thanking the police and others involved in the search.

Geppert wrote that the two had been lost near a campsite and described the search teams as 'exceptionally friendly.'
Vasquez called Việt Nam a safe country with kind, respectful people and praised its police as professional.
"Without the Bà Nà police, I would not be here today writing this letter," Vasquez wrote, thanking everyone who joined the rescue. — VNS
