HCM CITY — A construction contract signing ceremony was held in HCM City for the JICA grant aid project for trenchless sewerage pipe on Friday.

The project will rehabilitate ageing sewerage pipes in the city’s downtown, using trenchless technology to improve drainage and sewerage network performance, reduce the risk of road subsidence, and enhance public health and urban resilience.

The project addresses growing challenges associated with the deterioration of sewerage pipes constructed during the French colonial period, which have contributed to flooding, road collapses and groundwater contamination.

As part of the project, Yasuda and UICI signed the contract, covering the major construction works.

Approximately 2.1 km of ageing sewerage pipelines will be rehabilitated in heavily trafficked urban areas, where conventional open-cut methods are difficult to apply.

The use of trenchless technology is expected to minimise disruptions to traffic, local residents, and business activities while improving drainage capacity and structural integrity.

The project is expected to promote the efficient renewal of ageing infrastructure through advanced Japanese trenchless rehabilitation technology.

It will also facilitate technology transfer and capacity development, supporting the wider adoption of trenchless technologies in Việt Nam.

JICA will continue to support sustainable urban development and improved living conditions in the country.

Over the past time, JICA has supported Việt Nam's sewerage and drainage sector through master plan development, wastewater treatment facilities, sewerage and drainage networks, and flood mitigation measures.

In HCM City, JICA has contributed to water environment improvement through the city’s Sewerage and Drainage Master Plan and the city’s Water Environment Improvement Projects.

A pilot trenchless rehabilitation project implemented in 2015 with Osaka City and Japanese companies also laid the foundation for the present project. — VNS
