QUẢNG NINH — Nguyễn Cảnh Loan has been a Party member for 53 years, and he is passionate about researching and lifelong learning following the example of late President Hồ Chí Minh.
Loan, 88, lives in Hồng Hà Ward, Hạ Long City, in the northern province of Quảng Ninh.
He used to work in the public security sector and was one of the honourable soldiers who welcomed late President Hồ Chí Minh to visit the mining area in 1957, the second visit from Uncle Hồ to the province.
According to Loan’s memories, that day, when Uncle Hồ spoke to local people, he advised the State employees and Party members: “Party cadres as well as Government cadres, even I am, we are all servants of the people. We must wholeheartedly serve the people, and we must be frugal, honest, and upright. To do so, we must be close to the people, encourage the people and lead the people.”
The more he learned and researched, the more he admired Uncle Hồ's moral example and simple lifestyle.
For him, learning and following Uncle Hồ should start from simple daily activities.
He learned a number of things from Uncle Ho, especially the virtues of diligence and thrift.
‘Diligence’ showed in how, from 1993 onwards, he worked an average of ten hours a day. Learning was not only in school, in books and newspapers, but also among the people. Among them, the most typical person for learning was President Hồ Chí Minh.
Loan said that learning from Uncle Hồ meant learning how to serve the people first, learning the ideology of taking the people as the root, so for many of his works, he did not count the days, months, remuneration or effort.
Good example
Talking about Loan, Secretary of the Hồng Hà Ward Party Committee in Hạ Long City Triệu Văn Nghĩa said: “Comrade Loan is an exemplary cadre of the ward's Education Promotion Association. Despite his old age, his whole life is a shining example in studying and following Uncle Hồ's ideology, morality and self-study style. Since his retirement, Loan has devoted all his time to researching the history, culture and people of Quảng Ninh Province.”
Although his health is not as good as before, his mind is still sharp.
Learning from Uncle Hồ's ideology of lifelong learning, with a passion for research, Loan participated in editing many scientific books such as 'Place names of Quảng Ninh Province' from the Hùng King period to the present, with over 16,000 place names and over 1,000 pages and the book 'Chronicle of Quảng Ninh Province's history from the Hùng King period to 2020' with over 400 pages.
Loan remembered the day June 11, 1948, Uncle Hồ called for a patriotic emulation campaign.
With the wish to follow Uncle Hồ's teachings, he worked with the provincial authority to compile the book 'Uncle Hồ with the patriotic emulation campaign of Quảng Ninh Province'.
Currently, he is compiling two books, 'Land and people of Quảng Ninh' and 'Hồ Chí Minh Trail at sea in Quảng Ninh', which are expected to be released at the end of this year.
He also collects many stamp sets published in the media, such as an anti-illiteracy stamp set released in 1958, a set on education in 1960, a stamp set of national flags of various countries and a set celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Quảng Ninh Province, released in 2023.
Over the past 70 years, Loan has also continued to nurture his love of reading, collecting over 4,000 books on the history of Việt Nam and Quảng Ninh Province.
He also collects newspapers of all kinds from the first issues of the Vùng Mỏ Newspaper, Hải Ninh Newspaper and the newspaper of Quảng Ninh.
He often spends two hours a day reading ten types of newspapers and magazines, researching and collecting details of history, people, security and the world.
As secretary of the ward Party Committee, Loan actively spread information on the Party's guiding documents, the ideology, morality and style of late President Hồ Chí Minh to all the committee members.
He edits the newsletters of the Fatherland Front and the ward's mass organisations.
Loan advised the young generation to focus on studying Uncle Hồ’s ideology, morality and the living style of President Hồ Chí Minh.
Loan said that young people should also be grateful to the generations and ancestors who founded and defended the country.
The youth today and tomorrow have the responsibility to focus on studying to maintain the achievements of their predecessors and constantly strive to build the country to become more and more prosperous and developed. — VNS
