HÀ NỘI — Heavy rain has triggered landslides and flooding across northern mountain provinces, blocking key routes and prompting emergency road closures, the Vietnam Road Administration said.

On National Highway 6, traffic is blocked at 11 points and construction units are clearing debris and plants, with local authorities expecting to reopen the route later on Thursday.

Floodwaters at km387 on Highway 6 have forced a temporary closure. From km405+750 to km409+250, repeated slope failures, rockfalls and mudflows pose serious safety risks.

Police in Điện Biên Province and local civil defence have shut the section since 10.30am on Wednesday and are diverting traffic via alternative roads.

In Điện Biên Province, heavy rain caused uphill and downhill slope failures on National Highways 4H and 12 and on local roads, blocking five spots that have since been cleared for passage.

In Lai Châu Province, landslides have blocked some roads and temporary traffic has been restored.

Road Management Zone I has ordered maintenance teams to install barricades and warning signs at slide sites and mobilise equipment. Diversion plans and spoil sites are being set in case of further slides.

More heavy rain is forecast in Điện Biên Province. — VNS
