HÀ NỘI — The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued warnings of flash floods and landslides in Lai Châu, Điện Biên and Tuyên Quang province as heavy rain continues on Monday.
From 4:40 to 9:40am, rainfall totals reached 10-30mm in Điện Biên and Tuyên Quang, with some areas exceeding 50mm, and 20-40mm in Lai Châu, with certain spots topping 70mm.
Earlier, between midnight and 3am, Hồ Thầu in Tuyên Quang recorded 114mm, while Nậm Hăn in Lai Châu saw 89.4mm.
Soil moisture in some areas is already above 85 per cent, increasing the risk of floods and landslides in communes and wards, including Hua Bum, Khun Há, Phong Thổ, Tủa Thàng, Hồ Thầu and Xín Mần. The disaster risk level is currently at level 1.
Authorities warn such events could threaten lives, disrupt traffic, and damage infrastructure and production. Local agencies are urged to inspect vulnerable areas and take preventive measures.
At sea, scattered showers and thunderstorms are affecting the southern East Sea (known internationally as the South China Sea), including the Trường Sa (Spratly Islands), Lâm Đồng to An Giang, and the Gulf of Thailand.
Forecasters expect rain and thunderstorms throughout the day and night of Monday in the northern and southern East Sea, northern Gulf of Tonkin, waters from Lâm Đồng to Cà Mau, from Cà Mau to An Giang, and the Gulf of Thailand.
Thunderstorms may bring whirlwinds at sea, strong gusts and waves up to 3m.
All vessels in these areas are at risk from severe weather. — VNS
