HCM CITY — Việt Nam is committed to creating the best conditions for both domestic and international media to report on the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification on April 30.

A total of 169 foreign journalists from 39 news agencies across 17 countries, alongside over 630 journalists from 81 domestic media outlets, have registered to cover this historic occasion.

Speaking at a meeting with international journalists on Monday, Phạm Dứt Điểm, acting director of the HCM City Department of Foreign Affairs, said all the celebration activities will not only provide journalists the opportunity to revisit significant historical sites associated with the war but to witness the significant transformation of HCM City today.

“This significant occasion presents a unique opportunity to convey a powerful message: despite its history as a battleground, Việt Nam has flourished into a realm of peace, creativity, and aspirations for progress,” he said.

Edith Madelon Lederer, a former international war correspondent who reported on the conflict, said: “We all hold a deep affection for Việt Nam. The nation's invitation for our return has reinforced our bond with this remarkable place.”

"We are delighted to come back and witness the extraordinary advancements that HCM City has achieved, as well as those of Việt Nam as a whole, over the past 50 years since the war. We expect that upon our future visits, we will observe an even more dynamic and prosperous Việt Nam," she said.

To facilitate the media’s efforts, a Press Centre has been established at the HCM City Journalists’ Association headquarters, located near the primary parade and rally venue to ensure easy access for journalists to cover major events.

Speaking at a recent meeting, Nguyễn Văn Được, chairman of the city People’s Committee, noted the vital role of the media in documenting this significant event.

“The media’s coverage will play an essential role in capturing and disseminating the festive spirit surrounding this milestone, reviving historical memories, and showcasing Việt Nam’s determination as it confidently embraces a new era."

He has urged relevant agencies to work closely to ensure that reporters can operate effectively, whether they are writing articles, capturing photographs, or broadcasting live from the events.

He also encouraged journalists and editors to report on the celebrations with accuracy and in context. — VNS
