NEW YORK – United Nations leaders and ambassadors from various countries visited the Permanent Mission of Việt Nam to the UN in New York on July 24 (local time) to pay their respects to General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highly praised the leadership of General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng, acknowledging that under his guidance, Việt Nam has continued its remarkable development journey and has become an increasingly important partner of the United Nations.

On behalf of the UN, Guterres extended his deepest condolences to the Government, the people of Việt Nam, and the family of the General Secretary.

On the same day, President of the 78th UN General Assembly Dennis Francis met with Ambassador Đặng Hoàng Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Việt Nam to the UN, and expressed his deepest condolences on behalf of himself and the entire General Assembly to the State and people of Việt Nam.

The president shared the great loss felt by the Vietnamese people over the passing of a devoted leader who worked tirelessly for his country.

Ambassador Đặng Hoàng Giang thanked Guterres and Francis for their sincere gestures and sentiments toward the General Secretary, noting that under his leadership, Việt Nam has achieved significant milestones in its renewal, development, and international integration efforts, continuously enhancing its position, role, and contributions to the UN’s work.

Additionally, heads of the permanent missions of China and Laos visited and signed the book of condolences for the General Secretary. VNS
