HẢI PHÒNG — Alongside its traditional culture, Hải Phòng’s contemporary cultural and artistic life is thriving, reflecting its history and distinctive policies as the city moves to implement Politburo Resolution No. 80-NQ/TW on the development of Vietnamese culture.
According to Lê Trung Kiên, Vice Chairman of the Hải Phòng People’s Committee, one active initiative to implement Resolution No 80-NQ/TW is the inauguration of the Hoa Phượng Theatre and the city’s development as a city of music.
The Hoa Phượng Theatre is a new cultural landmark for Hải Phòng. It is a modern, fully equipped venue with high-standard sound, lighting and stage systems, suitable for symphonies, opera, theatre and large-scale events.
Hải Phòng is pursuing a city of music vision through 2030: promoting music education in schools, expanding performance spaces, organising large-scale music events and encouraging business participation in the cultural industry. Music will extend beyond the stage into the community and daily life.
Hải Phòng is also actively teaching traditional melodies in schools. Nguyễn Văn Tố Primary School in Lê Chân Ward exemplifies this effort through its An Biên Ca Trù (ceremonial singing) Club, which preserves and promotes traditional values.
Bùi Thị Là, a teacher at Nguyễn Văn Tố Primary School, said that as part of the 2026 Lê Chân Female General Traditional Festival, she and her students performed three pieces, including the chèo opera The Glory of Female General Lê Chân, composed and performed by the school’s teachers and students. The lyrics vividly portray the life, career and contributions of the Female General to Hải Phòng, helping students develop a deeper understanding of, pride in and affection for their city and country.
Phạm Văn Tân, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Lê Chân Ward, noted that the locality continues to raise public awareness of their responsibility to preserve the Nghè Temple and the An Biên communal house, relics associated with General Lê Chân, and to promote the traditional Lê Chân Festival, a national intangible cultural heritage.
Each year on the eighth day of the second lunar month, Lê Chân Ward holds the traditional festival honouring General Lê Chân, who contributed to land reclamation, village founding and the development of the ancient An Biên settlement, the predecessor of today’s city. The festival is both a cultural and religious event with strong local identity and plays an important role in implementing Resolution No. 80-NQ/TW by preserving and promoting traditional cultural values and educating younger generations about the city’s historical and cultural heritage. — VNS
