HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese tennis players have returned home from Malaysia after securing their place in next season's Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group III.
The 2026 tournament wrapped up over the weekend, featuring Iran, Jordan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Uzbekistan, the hosts Malaysia and Việt Nam, who battled it out to secure a place in the 2027 Group II Play-offs.
The eight nations were split into two pools of four, with each side playing the others in the group to determine placings.
Việt Nam lost by the same result of 1-2 to both Saudi Arabia and Iran before beating the host side 3-0 in Group B. The team had to compete in the playoff match against higher-ranked rival Uzbekistan.
Phạm La Hoàng Anh beat Damir Abdusamadov 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, 6-1 in the first singles match and Vũ Hà Minh Đức overcame Amir Milushev 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
The victory maintained Việt Nam's place in Group III next year, which was their target before the tournament.
Head coach Nguyễn Phi Anh Vũ said: “I am happy with the result and proud of my young players. Despite playing against stronger rivals, they were united and showed their best, fighting for Việt Nam.
"They completed their mission and deserve to have a place in this tournament next season." — VNS
