Vietnamese masters eye medals in Mongolian Asian championship

HÀ NỘI — Five Vietnamese players will compete at the 21st Asian Continental Chess Championship in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, aiming to secure Grandmaster norms and places at the FIDE World Cup 2027.

More than 250 players are expected to take part in the tournament, which runs from May 29 to June 7.

Đầu Khương Duy is Việt Nam’s highest-seeded player, ranked 22nd in the Open category. He will compete alongside teammates Phạm Trần Gia Phúc and Đinh Nho Kiệt against a strong field of rivals.

In the women’s category, national champion Lương Phương Hạnh and young master Nguyễn Thanh Thủy Tiên will represent Việt Nam.

The tournament offers a total prize fund of more than US$100,000, with the Open champion receiving $15,000 and the women’s winner taking home $12,000.

Under tournament regulations, the top five players in the Open category and the women’s champion will qualify for the FIDE World Cup 2027. — VNS
