Young Vietnamese athletes earn medals at Asian championships

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam won its first gold medal at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships on December 19 in Doha, Qatar.

Ka Hoài took one gold and two silvers in the women's youth 45kg category.

She topped the podium in the clean and jerk with a lift of 86kg before coming in second in the snatch with a 66kg lift. In total, her 152kg brought her the second silver.

Indian lifter Payal won the total with 155kg (70kg and 85kg), while Alexandra Diaz of the Philippines came third with 148kg (65kg and 83kg).

Meanwhile Bùi Minh Đạo took two silvers and one bronze in the men's youth 49kg competition, and Hoàng Khánh Vy bagged one silver and one bronze in the women's youth 40kg. Trần Thị Bắc earned a silver in the women's junior 45kg.

"This year's tournament brings together young athletes from many strong weightlifting teams on the continent," said Nguyễn Huy Hùng, head of Việt Nam's delegation.

“This is a good starting result for Việt Nam at this tournament. We hope athletes will compete harder to earn better achievements."

The championship features competitions in 40 categories, 20 each at the junior and youth levels. Medals will be awarded separately for snatch, clean and jerk and total in each bodyweight category. The tournament will continue until December 26. VNS
