HÀ NỘI Because the core function of the trade union is to represent, take care of and protect the rights and interests of labourers, union organisations must work with agencies to promptly handle issues that impact employees.

Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc made the request on Sunday at a meeting held by the Việt Nam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) in Hà Nội to mark the 90th founding anniversary of the Việt Nam Trade Union (July 28).

He urged trade union organisations to revamp their operations and promote their role in guiding workers’ movements.

Party General Secretary and President Nguyễn Phú Trọng sent a flower basket to the event.

At the meeting, PM Phúc asked trade union organisations at all levels, especially the VGCL, to follow the Party’s guidelines and policies, particularly Resolution No 20 guiding the continued building of the Vietnamese working class in the context of industrialisation and modernisation.

Communication work should be intensified in order to raise the quality of trade union members, thus improving their political will, patriotism, national pride and law observance, he said.

Trade union organisations need to help build policies and laws regarding jobs, wages, social insurance and occupational safety and hygiene, the PM said.

They should also pay attention to developing the contingent of trade union officials in an effective and streamlined manner, the leader said.

PM Phúc lauded trade union organisations at all levels, particularly the VGCL, for their efforts to organise meaningful activities in support of labourers.

He also said the Party, the State and the Việt Nam Fatherland Front would further support the trade union organisations in fulfilling their role and tasks.

VGCL President Bùi Văn Cường, who is also Vice President of the World Federation of Trade Unions, said trade union units at all levels were making all-out efforts to renew their organisations and expand their networks of members.

On behalf of the Party and State, PM Phúc presented the Hồ Chí Minh Order to the VGCL for the third time. VNS
