HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Red Cross Society and Hà Nội Red Cross have opened two cooling shelters for outdoor workers at 548 Trần Cung Street and 527 Phạm Văn Đồng Street in the city’s Bắc Từ Liêm District.
The move is part of a project funded by the German Red Cross. The cooling shelters are located in a community house in the areas where outdoor workers and vendors usually work.
They will receive cool towels, drinks and can take a nap at noon at the shelters. Volunteers and health officers will provide them with first aid if necessary to respond to sun stroke.
Nguyễn Thị Hà, head of Disasters Management Department under Việt Nam Red Cross Society, said more than 500 people use the shelters weekly since they were opened on July 20.
Under the project, 13 other cooling shelters are planned to open across the city.
If the model is effective, such cooling shelters would be available in other provinces including Thanh Hoá, Nghệ An, Hà Tĩnh and Đà Nẵng. — VNS
