KHÁNH HÒA — The number of patients infected with dengue fever has increased considerably in the central coastal province of Khánh Hòa in the final weeks of the year.
During last week, the province reported 521 new cases of dengue, far more than the 352 cases in the week before. Khánh Vĩnh was the only district to report a decrease in the number of dengue patients, with the remaining localities including Nha Trang City (289 cases) and Ninh Hòa Township (86 cases) reporting increases.
According to the provincial preventive medicine centre, there have been nearly 5,430 dengue cases across the province so far this year, an increase of 76 per cent against 2017 (3,082 cases). Nha Trang tourism city accounted for a half of all cases (2,810). Diên Khánh District (772) was in second.
The centre has instructed district authorities to carry out measures to prevent the disease including spraying for mosquitoes and cleaning around living areas.
The provincial centre suggested non-serious dengue cases be treated at home to avoid overcrowding at hospitals.
Doctors said these patients should take proper preventive methods to ensure they do not transmit the disease to other people in their house.
A centre official said grassroots health centres have to co-ordinate closely with specialised health agencies to speed up the supervision, detection and timely prevention of the outbreak.
In the coming week, the provincial preventive medicine centre will continue co-operating with Nha Trang’s health department and Youth Union to apply mosquito spray in all of the city’s residential quarters to stamp out the epidemic. — VNS
