HCM CITY — Police on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for the owner of a BMW who allegedly killed one woman and injured another six after she drove into several vehicles at a traffic light in HCM City last weekend.

Bình Thạnh District police also decided to initiate an official investigation against 46-year-old Nguyễn Thị Nga for traffic violations.

On Sunday night, Nga was driving on Điện Biên Phủ Street towards the Sài Gòn Bridge.

Approaching Hàng Xanh roundabout at around 11.15pm, witnesses said the car sped up and hit a series of five motorbikes which were waiting at a red light and only stopped when it crashed into a taxi.

A motorcyclist, 38-year-old Nguyễn Thị Kim Phụng, was struck by the luxury vehicle and dragged dozens of metres along the road. She was killed instantly.

Six men were also injured in the collision, two of which suffered traumatic brain injuries. One victim remains in a coma.

A breathalyser test showed that Nga’s blood alcohol level was 0.94mg/litre of breath. In Việt Nam, it is prohibited to consume alcohol when driving cars.

Nga admitted to the police that she drank alcohol at a party in a restaurant on Pasteur Street in District 3. When she was driving home, she said, the strap on her right high-heel sandal snagged on the accelerator pedal and in a panic she stepped on the pedal. — VNS
