HCM CITY — A couple from the Tây Nguyên (Central Highlands) province of Lâm Đồng has been fined VNĐ30 million (US$1,300) for carrying cash exceeding the permitted amount without customs declaration when checking out for international exit at airport.

Customs officers at Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport announced on Tuesday the issuance of the fine to the couple as they were found with VNĐ200 million($8,900) in cash without customs declaration or a cash-carrying permit from bank.

The customs office temporarily seized the excessive amount of VNĐ170 million and collected the fine of VNĐ15 million from each. The seized money will be returned when the fine is collected.

According to Circular 15/2011/TT-NHNN dated August 12, 2011 of the State Bank of Việt Nam, regulating the carrying of foreign currency and Việt Nam đồng cash by persons on entry or exit, passengers are allowed to carry VNĐ15 million or US$5,000 or equivalent foreign currency in cash on their entry or exit. If they are carrying more, they must declare the amount with border-gate customs offices or present a cash-carrying permit from banks. — VNS
