HCM CITY —  Site clearance for the construction of the new Long Thành International Airport in the southern province of Đồng Nai remains slow, according to authorities.

The land clearance project, handled by the provincial People’s Committee, has lagged behind schedule due to the People’s Committee’s lack of experience in carrying out feasibility study reports on land clearance.

In addition, the provincial People’s Committee is not familiar with making environmental impact assessments.

The site covers an area occupied by the Đồng Nai Rubber Corporation (DONARUCO) and about 200 households.

Provincial authorities have asked DONARUCO to hand over its site next year, while the 200 households must relocate by the end of next year.

As soon as the feasibility study report is approved by the Government, the People’s Committee will carry out construction of the resettlement area and its infrastructure.

The Government has asked authorities to conduct regular check-ups on the project and tackle emerging issues as soon as they can.

The Ministry of Transport, which is in charge of construction of the airport, said it would ensure that construction would remain on schedule. — VNS
