HÀ GIANG Prolonged heavy rain and flash floods in the northern province of Hà Giang have killed one person while another remains missing as of Monday, according to the People’s Committee of Quang Bình District.

The deceased was named as Hoàng Văn Sầu, 64 years old. His son, 30-year-old Hoàng Văn Đại, from Bản Rịa Village, is missing. Two others were injured.

The flood swept away six houses, severely damaged dozens of others and killed cattle of ethnic minority residents. Crops which were about to be harvested were lost.

The rain and flooding also destroyed many sections of National Highway No.279, isolating Bản Rịa Commune and damaged local primary and secondary schools.

After being notified, leaders of Quang Bình District People’s Committee visited Bản Rịa and asked the commune and relevant offices to search for the missing, bring locals whose houses were swept away or destroyed to safety, and soon resume operations of the route leading to the commune.

The district’s Steering Board on Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue announced the provision of VNĐ10 million (US$430) for the family of the deceased and missing victims, and VNĐ3 million ($140) for each household whose home was swept away.  — VNS
