CÀ MAU — The southernmost province of Cà Mau has built a 14km sea dyke on its western coast at a cost of VNĐ158 billion (US$6.94 million).
The work was done as part of a national programme to reinforce and upgrade sea dykes between the central province of Quảng Ngãi and the Mekong Delta province of Kiên Giang.
The 7.5m wide dyke in Cà Mau has been built between the mouths of the Hương Mai and Tiểu Dừa Rivulets in U Minh District.
It will also be used as a road.
The construction was started in 2015 by the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Another 15km stretch is being built on the western coast in Trần Văn Thời District at a cost of VNĐ149 billion ($6.55 million).
The province, a peninsula, has a 254km coastline that is severely affected by landslides and salinity intrusion, which constantly threaten lives and crops. – VNS
