BÀ RỊA – VŨNG TÀU – The southern coastal province of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu yesterday confirmed its first Zika case.
The province’s Department of Health said the 19-year-old patient lives in Tân Thành District. He was admitted to the district’s Centre of Health on October 30 and was discharged on November 2. He was later transferred to a hospital in HCM City, where he was confirmed as being infected by the virus.
Before showing symptoms, he visited his girlfriend in HCM City, which at press time has 35 Zika recorded cases, the most nationwide.
Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu’s health sector is conducting an investigation to determine the infection source and is carrying out preventive measures to prevent the virus from spreading.
The team is cooperating with HCM City-based Pasteur Institute to take more samples for testing and to spray antiseptic in the area surrounding the patient’s house this afternoon.
With this newly-confirmed case, total Zika cases in Việt Nam have reached 43.
All the cases were detected in the southern and Central Highland provinces. — VNS
