HCM CITY — HCM City will restrict car traffic on several main thoroughfares starting October 10 to support the construction of metro line No. 2 between Bến Thành and Tham Lương, according to the Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR).
Vũ Văn Vịnh, director of Project Management Board No. 2 under MAUR, said underground station construction has been proceeding following regulatory approval of traffic management plans.
Work is already underway across five stations including Hòa Hưng Station, Lê Thị Riêng Station, and Phạm Văn Hai Station in Hòa Hưng Ward as well as ST9 Station and Táo Đàn Station in Bến Thành Ward.
Beginning October 10, construction barriers will be extended to Tao Đàn Station, Bảy Hiền Station, and Nguyễn Hồng Đào Station.
Work zones will maintain at least 7.5m of roadway for public passage while select surrounding streets will be converted into one-way traffic corridors.
At Tao Đàn Station in Bến Thành Ward, Cách Mạng Tháng 8 (August Revolution) Street from Nguyễn Du Street to Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai Street as well as Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai Street from Cao Thắng Street to Huyền Trân Công Chúa Street will become one-way streets.
Drivers can use alternative routes via Huyền Trân Công Chúa, Thủ Khoa Huân, Lê Thánh Tôn, Phạm Hồng Thái, Trương Định, Võ Văn Tần, or Nguyễn Đình Chiểu streets.
At Dân Chủ Station near Dân Chủ Roundabout, sections of Cách Mạng Tháng 8, Võ Thị Sáu, Nguyễn Thông, and Lý Chính Thắng streets across Xuân Hòa and Nhiêu Lộc wards will be restricted to one-way traffic.
Authorities will install movable barriers at Dân Chủ Roundabout alongside dedicated U-turn lanes for motorbikes.
Within the construction zone from Hòa Hưng Station to Phạm Văn Hai Station, cars will be banned on Cách Mạng Tháng 8 Street traveling from Lý Thường Kiệt Street toward 3 Tháng 2 Street, though public buses remain permitted to operate in both directions.
Other vehicles can detour via Lý Thường Kiệt Street or follow the alternative route along Trường Chinh, Hoàng Văn Thụ, Lê Bình, Hoàng Sa, Rạch Bùng Binh, Bà Huyện Thanh Quan, Võ Thị Sáu, and 3 Tháng 2 streets.
At Bảy Hiền Station in Bảy Hiền Ward, vehicles passing through the intersection of Trường Chinh, Cách Mạng Tháng 8, Lý Thường Kiệt, and Hoàng Văn Thụ streets will not be allowed to travel straight onto Cách Mạng Tháng 8 Street.
At Nguyễn Hồng Đào Station, passenger cars and trucks will face restrictions on a section of Trường Chinh Street, with traffic redirected via Trương Công Định, Bàu Cát, and Đồng Đen streets.
Traffic management surrounding ST9 Station and ST10 Station will continue to undergo adjustments along Trường Chinh, Tân Kỳ Tân Quý, and Huỳnh Văn Gấm streets through median closures and U-turn points.
Rerouting plans for Bến Thành Station are under review by the city’s Department of Construction with fencing scheduled for early November, while traffic plans for Dân Chủ Station are also being finalised.
MAUR has asked residents to monitor updated transit maps and proactively choose suitable travel routes to minimise traffic disruptions throughout the construction period. — VNS
