ĐẮK LẮK — The Buôn Ma Thuột City health authorities in Đắk Lắk Province are intensifying measures to contain mumps outbreaks at two primary schools in Buôn Ma Thuột Ward.
The Chu Văn Ơn Primary School has recorded 11 suspected cases of mumps across various classes with children having symptoms such as fever and swollen and painful jaws. Several of the infected students live in the same accomodation unit.
Their parents were promptly notified and told to take their children home for quarantine and treatment.
Local health authorities have visited the accommodation unit to guide the locals in outbreak response.
The Lê Văn Tám Primary School reported nine suspected mumps infections with similar symptoms to the local health station.
Health officials said the outbreak's rapid spread is driven by close communal contact, posing a severe risk to non-immune children, and they face multiple hurdles in containing it, like poor hand hygiene among students and the difficulty of completely quarantining young children.
Furthermore, some parents remain unaware of the transmission risks and do not observe their children's symptoms, they said.
The Buôn Ma Thuột Ward health station has rolled out inspection and monitoring measures and apprised families on how to care for sick children at home and prevent the disease.
