HCM CITY — The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre has helped transport a foreign sailor at sea in urgent need of medical attention in land.

On April 9 morning, the centre's SAR 272 vessel brought the sailor ashore in Phước Thắng Ward in HCM City, handing him over to the Border Guard to transfer to a medical facility for further specialised treatment.

Previously, at 8.40pm on April 8, the centre received a call from the ESL DACHAN BAY ship (on a voyage from Taiwan (China) to Singapore) about a male Phillipine sailor who was experiencing severe abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant, accompanied by vomiting and sweating.

The ship diverted its course to the area off the coast of HCM City and requested help to bring the patients ashore for emergency treatment.

The centre promptly provided initial medical consultation for the patient, coordinating with relevant authorities and representatives of the ship owner to develop a plan to bring the patient ashore for medical support.

He was diagnosed of having acute appendicitis, with a high risk of serious complications if not treated promptly.

The SAR 272 vessel was dispatched with a team of doctors and medical staff from Vũng Tàu Hospital to carry out the rescue mission, which approached the ESL DACHAN BAY at the designated meeting point, received the patient, and quickly bring him ashore. — VNS
