HÀ NỘI — For years, through many practical actions, the Việt Nam Young Physicians Association (VYPA) has affirmed its spirit devoting its time and expertise within community health care, following late President Hồ Chí Minh's teachings.
In the first days of this year, young doctors from the VYPA, the Young Doctors Club of different hospitals such as the National Cancer Hospital, the Bạch Mai Hospital and the Việt Nam-Germany Friendship Hospital joined a volunteer programme providing free medical examinations for a thousand people in Hưng Yên Province.
The young medics gave general and specialised health checks, offered X-rays, diabetes and blood urea tests, checked patients' heart rates, blood pressure, delivered ultrasounds and advised people on how to recognise and treat chronic diseases.
They also examined and delivered free medicines to families of wounded soldiers, families of revolutionary contributors and underpreviledged families.
Prior to that, at the VYPA’s programme 'Spring Volunteer – Tết Charity', doctors gave health checks, free medicine and gifts to people in Chứ Kbô Commune, Krông Buk District, Central Highlands province of Đắk Lắk.
In addition, the association carried out ten free heart surgeries for children and 50 cataract surgeries for people with eye diseases.
The continuous and exciting volunteer programmes for the community are a series in the programme of the VYPA’s work which follow late President Hồ Chí Minh's teachings urging them to share and care for others.
With the common goal of strengthening chronic diseases screening and applying digital transformation in supporting regular health care, the VYPA’s journey has affirmed the young doctors’ spirit, role, position and prestige, contributing to the cause of protecting, caring for and improving people's health.
General Secretary General of the VYPA Nguyễn Hữu Tú said that last year alone, they had involved more than 21,000 young physicians, at hospitals from central to local levels, participating in direct and online medical examinations and treatment for people across the country.
The number of people receiving direct medical examinations was more than 1.13 million.
Notably, more than one million people were screened through an artificial intelligence (AI) platform. More than 2.6 million young people were counselled on non-communicable diseases and risk factors. Nearly 3,000 poor people, patients and children received financial support or free medical support.
The young doctors also made their mark while joining natural disaster prevention and control activities such as supporting 11 provinces affected by Typhoon Yagi with basic medicine bags, supplies, medical equipment and gifts, while also examining and treating more than 14,000 people.
They were active in giving gifts, supplements, free meals to poor people, organising voluntary blood donations, providing nutrition advice, offering instructions on hygiene practices and oral health for children and helping people to use AI disease screening software.
Creative youth
Affirming the role of young doctors in the community, Hà Anh Đức, Chairman of the VYPA, said: “Currently, the VYPA has more than 90,000 members nationwide and has made many contributions to the cause of caring for and improving people's health. Young doctors are not afraid of difficulties, with their youth and enthusiasm, with the spirit of volunteerism and initiative of youth, have done practical activities towards the community, especially in remote areas, border areas and islands.”
Not only health care, the doctors’ youthful spirit is also reflected in applying science and technology, pioneering in digital transformation.
Especially, AI application in early diagnosis, screening and early detection of diseases has been strongly deployed.
For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the VYPA conducted mobile testing solutions in provinces and cities and helped significantly push back the pandemic.
Currently, they are also taking the lead in applying AI with the programme 'Digital transformation for lung health' to examine and screen for cancer and lung diseases for people nationwide.
The programme helps improve diagnostic capacity, improve the quality of treatment and care who are suffering from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or need help with lung cancer management.
It applies digital tools and digital transformation solutions in disease monitoring to support risk prediction, prevention and control of these diseases.
The programme has screened more than 50,000 people nationwide and supported more than two million people to access information, raise awareness of lung cancer and other lung diseases.
In addition, the VYPA members have also played an active role in scientific research, making great contributions to the overall development of the healthcare system.
Many initiatives and scientific topics directly implemented and participated in by young physicians have brought about practical results in all aspects of protecting, caring for and improving people's health.
Many young physicians have been recognised as outstanding young Vietnamese faces over the years.
Deputy Minister of Health Trần Văn Thuấn said that the image of young doctors going to all regions, including remote, isolated and disadvantaged areas nationwide to examine and treat patients, provide health consultations and free medicine to people were touching.
The campaign of young doctors volunteering for community health has continuously grown and brought about effectiveness with a high spread in society.
“In all conditions, especially in difficult places, the image of young doctors wearing both the white coat of the medical profession and the green shirt of volunteers is more beautiful than ever - worthy of Uncle Hồ's teachings,” said Thuấn. — VNS
