HCM CITY — HCM City authorities have formally apologised to a well-known American streamer for an incident involving overcharging of a hoverboard rental on Nguyễn Huệ Walking Street in the downtown area.
On September 15, a representative of the Department of Tourism met with IshowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., to express regret over the incident, which occurred on September 14.
The streamer and his crew did not lodge complaints and accepted the authorities’ response.
The seller, who overcharged the streamer VNĐ1 million ($41) for a five-minute rental, was fined for illegal street vending.
Typically, hoverboard rentals cost around VNĐ50,000 ($2) for 15 minutes. Following the incident, the seller visited the streamer's hotel to refund the overcharged amount.
Lê Trương Hiền Hòa, deputy director of the Department of Tourism, highlighted ongoing issues with overcharging and unauthorised vendors, stating the city will enhance management efforts in tourist-heavy areas.
IShowSpeed, who has nearly 30 million followers, was in Việt Nam for tourism and media events when the incident occurred.
Nguyễn Huệ Pedestrian Street, extending over 670 metres, runs from the HCM City People’s Committee headquarters to Bạch Đằng Wharf Park along the Saigon River.
The location is a venue for significant cultural and artistic events, serving as a popular attraction for both domestic and international visitors. — VNS
