NHA TRANG — The sound of ancient stones will resonate once again along Nha Trang's coastline as a unique 54-piece lithophone set goes on display at the Hòn Chồng-Hòn Đỏ National Scenic Site.
Organised by the Khánh Hòa Provincial Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation, the week-long programme, themed Stone Sings the Song of the Blue Sea, is among the cultural highlights of the Khánh Hòa Sea Festival 2026.
Alongside daily performances of the remarkable instrument, visitors can enjoy traditional ensemble concerts, hands-on experiences and a photography exhibition celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Việt Nam's ethnic communities.
Ancient sounds, enduring heritage
Khánh Hòa has long been recognised as the birthplace of the Khánh Sơn lithophone, discovered at the Dốc Gạo archaeological site. In 2024, the Khánh Sơn Lithophone Collection was officially recognised as a National Treasure, affirming its significance as one of the country's most remarkable archaeological and musical legacies.
Building on that heritage, this year's festival introduces the 54-piece lithophone set assembled by collector Nguyễn Xuân Quang after years of research and dedication.
Beyond its impressive musical range, the instrument carries symbolic meaning. Its 54 carefully selected stone bars represent the unity of Việt Nam's 54 ethnic groups, transforming the instrument into both a musical creation and a tribute to the nation's cultural diversity.
Immersive cultural experience
The festival will officially open on July 15 and continue through July 21, offering visitors a variety of interactive activities throughout the week.
In addition to performances by experienced artists and traditional musicians, visitors will have the opportunity to play the lithophone themselves under the guidance of artisans, gaining a deeper appreciation of one of humanity's oldest percussion instruments.

Organisers say preparations have combined conventional media with digital communication platforms to bring the event to wider audiences, while partnerships with travel companies are helping incorporate the programme into tours for both domestic and international visitors. The approach reflects broader efforts to harness digital technology and innovation to preserve cultural heritage while making it more accessible and engaging for today's audiences.
Set against the backdrop of the sea, where the rhythmic sound of waves mingles with the resonant tones of ancient stone, the event offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience history through music. More than a performance, it showcases how traditional heritage can continue to thrive by embracing new ways of connecting with the public.
