Vietnamese screen icon Thương Tín dies at 69
HCM CITY — Veteran Vietnamese actor Bùi Thương Tín, known professionally as Thương Tín, one of the defining faces of southern cinema and theatre in the 1980s, has died at 69 after years of declining health, his family announced on Tuesday (Dec 9).
His son, Thanh Tùng, said the actor passed away at 6:50pm on Monday at the family home in Phan Rang. Funeral rites began on December 9, with burial scheduled for December 10 at Hòa Thủy Cemetery.
Musician Tô Hiếu, who assisted him during his last months, said Thương Tín had been living with partial paralysis and several chronic conditions. His former partner Kim Chi returned to Phan Rang with their 12-year-old daughter, Thanh Thảo, to attend the funeral.
The actor had faced prolonged financial and health difficulties. After a stroke in 2021, colleagues organised fundraising efforts to help him cover treatment costs. He briefly returned to small music performances in 2022, but recurring illness made regular work impossible. A 2023 traffic accident left him with severe knee injuries, forcing him to use a wheelchair until his death.
Born in 1955, Thương Tín trained at the Sài Gòn National School of Music and Drama before joining leading theatre troupes such as Cửu Long Giang and the Kim Cương Troupe.
He earned acclaim for roles in major stage productions, including Bông Hồng Cài Áo (The Rose on the Shirt), Vực Thẳm Chiều Cao (The Heights of the Abyss), Huyền Thoại Mẹ (Legend of the Mother), and others.
He later became a household name on screen, most notably through the political thriller Ván Bài Lật Ngửa (The Uncovered Hand); the action series SBC; the wartime classic Biệt Động Sài Gòn (Saigon Rangers); and Chiến Trường Chia Nửa Vầng Trăng (The Battlefield that Split the Crescent Moon).
He published his memoir Một Đời Giông Bão (A Stormy Life) in 2015, recounting his artistic journey and personal relationships.
