HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s top male badminton player Nguyễn Tiến Minh and his wife Vũ Thị Trang won in the Yonex Sunrise - Việt Nam Open in HCM City on Wednesday.
Minh, world No 58, easily beat Daniel Fan of Australia, world No 197, 21-14, 21-8 after only 23 minutes in the men’s singles second round.
Meanwhile, Minh’s wife, Vũ Thị Trang, who is world No 53, defeated Mine Ayumi of Japan, world No 76, 24-22, 18-21, 21-11 in the women’s singles first round.
Olympian Minh will next meet Thammasin Sitthikom of Thailand, world No 45, while Trang will face Portip Buranaprasertsuk, world No 82, also of Thailand.
Besides, Đỗ Tuấn Đức and Phạm Như Thảo qualified for the second round of the mixed doubles event. National team members Phạm Cao Cường and Nguyễn Thuỳ Linh were ousted from the first round of the mixed doubles.
