Shooter Vinh to vie for medal in women's 25m pistol

 PARIS -- Trịnh Thu Vinh advances to the final of the women's 25m pistol event at the Paris Olympics on August 2.

Asian mixed pair champion Vinh has a good performance in the Precision part in which each shooter fires 30 shots in three series.

The Vietnamese take 20 10 points and nine nine points to have a total of 290 points. She places No 12 among 40 participants.

In the Rapid part of 30 shots, Vinh does brilliant job with 27 10 points and three nine points and has a total 297 points. She makes all supporters at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre go wild when she scores 17 10 points in a row in this part.

After 60 shots, Vinh earns 587 points in total, an average of 9.783 points each shot. She jumps to place No 4 standing below Veronika Major of Hungary (592 points), Manu Bhaker of India (590 points) and Haniyeh Rostamiyan of Iran (588 points).

Other finalists are Zhao Nan of China, Yang Jiin of South Korea, Camille Jedrzejewski of France and Katelyn Morgan Abeln of the US.

The final will be held on August 3.

In athletics, Vietnamese teenager Trần Thị Nhi Yến makes a remarkable Olympic debut when she advances to the qualification round 1 in the women's 100m event.

 Yến is one of two wildcard holder of Việt Nam at this Games edition.

She comes to Paris with a goal of learning and experiencing from world elite runners.

In the Preliminary Round - Heat 2, Yến is against eight other runners and she successfully finished first in a time of 11.81sec. It is the first time that a Vietnamese runner can take the top place in an Olympic race even though it is a qualifier.

An hour and a half later, she competes in Round 1 of eight heats which includes nine runners. Top three of each heat will qualify for the next round.

Yến runs faster at 11.79sec but finishes seventh. The result is not enough for her to go through and Yến is out of the tournament.

In swimming, another wildcard holder of Việt Nam, Võ Thị Mỹ Tiên, is eliminated in the women's 200m individual medley.

Tiên finishes fourth in the second qualification heat in a time of 2min 17.18sec which places her at No 27 among 33 swimmers. Meanwhile only top 16 can advance to the semi-finals.

In rowing, Việt Nam's oldest athlete Phạm Thị Huệ wraps up her first Olympics at No 23 in the women's singles sculls category.

 Huệ competes in the Final D for places from No 19-24. She finishes the 2,000m race at in a time of 7:47.84, setting her personal best. 

On July 31, two archers Đỗ Thị Ánh Nguyệt and Lê Quốc Phong were out of the Games.

Phong lost 0-6 to Dan Olaru of Moldova in the men's singles last-32 round.

 Hours later Nguyệt drew Mobina Fallah of Iran 5-5 at the end of five sets. In the single arrow shoot-off, Nguyệt did good job with a 10-point shot but Fallah was better with a 10+ as her shot was closer to the centre. VNS
