HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Văn Khánh Phong secured a silver in gymnastics for Việt Nam on the fifth day of the Asian Games' (ASIAD) competition on September 27 in China.

Phong took part in his favourite event, the men's rings, that won him gold at the SEA Games in May in Cambodia after he beat world champion Carlos Yulo of the Philippines last May in Cambodia.

The 20-year-old delivered a flawless performance but only received 14.300 points.

The Vietnamese coaching board decided to complain. After checks, referees corrected it to 14,600 points that ensured Phong's second place. 

Chinese Lan Xingyu won gold with 15.433 points. Japanese Tanigawa Wataru finished third on 14.300 points.

It was the first medal for the gymnastics squad which ended their journey in Hangzhou.

In other news, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyễn Văn Hùng sent a congratulation letter to the Việt Nam Team after Phạm Quang Huy won a shooting gold on September 28.

"I am really happy about the first gold medal at the Asian Games, the continental largest sporting event," Hùng wrote.

"On behalf of the ministry's leaders and with my personal feelings, I warmly praise and congratulate the entire Việt Nam Sports Delegation for their solidarity and efforts that bring us medals.

"Marksman Phạm Quang Huy today competed outstandingly to beat all rivals to take a gold in such a prestigious competition.

"Competing at this largest tournament in Asia, which sees the continental and the world leading competitors, is a big challenge to Vietnamese athletes.

"I believe that the national supporters will watch and strongly encourage our team during the tournament. I hope that achievement of all athletes and Huy's title will inspire and push their teammates up to perform well in the following days of the Games.

"I wish all of you good health and am looking forward to a successful ASIAD." VNS
