HÀ NỘI — The Vietnamese national football team will be placed in Pot 2, the second seed group, for the qualifying draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In the FIFA’s latest ranking, Việt Nam sit 95th in the world and 12th in Asia.
By being among the world’s top 100 teams and top 20 in Asia, Việt Nam won’t need to take part in the play-off round to progress through to the group stage of the qualifiers for both the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
Most likely, Việt Nam will be in the Pot 2 with Uzbekistan, Lebanon, Jordan, Bahrain, China, Syria, Palestine and Kyrgyzstan.
Meanwhile, Pot 1 will be the leading teams of Asia, including Japan, Iran, South Korea, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman.
Pot 3 features India, Tajikistan, Thailand, North Korea, the Philippines, Turkmenistan, Malaysia and two play-off winners.
Pot 4 will be made up of teams qualifying from the play-off round.
All 36 teams will be divided into nine groups, with the top two going to the third qualification round of the Asian region for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and making the finals of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
The draw will be held in July. VNS
