HÀ NỘI — Hà Nội and Sài Gòn (HCM City) train stations will start using automated ticket checking gates from December 15 in an effort to tighten security at the end of the year.

Passengers will have to scan the QR code on their tickets at the scanner installed at the automated gates. The scanners can read the code on printed tickets and electronic devices.

A station officer will be present at the gates to assist passengers with this fairly new system.

Passengers are allowed to carry hand luggage weighing no more than 20kg, otherwise they have to check in the luggage for an extra fee.

The Việt Nam Railways in October announced that it would install automatic ticket checking gates at the three most crowded stations -- Hà Nội, Sài Gòn and Đà Nẵng -- to improve passenger safety and prevent vendors from sneaking onto the platforms. — VNS
