KHÁNH HOÀ — Amid prolonged heavy rains, schools in southern areas of the south-central province Khánh Hoà have proactively suspended classes on Thursday (September 24) to ensure students’ safety, with make-up lessons to be arranged at a suitable time.

Amid complicated flooding caused by prolonged heavy rains, several schools in southern Khánh Hoà suspended classes on the morning of September 24 to keep students safe, as heavy rains caused flooding on school grounds.

From the afternoon of September 23 through the morning of September 24, widespread heavy rains continued across Khánh Hoà.

Water overflowed several roads and flowed rapidly, making travel difficult. At some schools, floodwater had entered school grounds, making conditions unsafe for students to study and carry out daily activities.

Schools that suspended classes included several campuses of Thuận Nam Primary School and Thuận Nam Secondary School in Thuận Nam Commune; several campuses of Phước Dinh Primary School in Phước Dinh Commune; several campuses of Ninh Phước Primary School in Ninh Phước Commune; and several schools in Phan Rang and Ninh Chử wards.

Cổ Nguyễn Minh Toàn, Vice Chairman of the Thuận Nam Commune People’s Committee, said prolonged and complicated flooding had inundated several low-lying areas of the commune.

The committee asked school principals to assess the actual situation and proactively suspend classes on September 24 to ensure students’ safety.

Schools were also instructed to arrange staff and teachers to remain on duty so that any unexpected incidents could be promptly handled.

According to the management board of Thuận Nam Primary School, the school decided to let students leave classes early on the afternoon of September 23 after heavy rain intensified.

Students were then notified that classes would also be suspended on the morning of September 24.

The school management also arranged staff and officials to remain on duty to deal with any unusual incidents that might occur.

Earlier, following Official Dispatch No. 01/CĐ-UBND issued by the provincial People’s Committee on proactively responding to heavy rains, flash floods and landslides, the Khánh Hoà Department of Education and Training asked local authorities and schools to prepare for heavy rains, flooding, flash floods, landslides, whirlwinds, lightning and hail.

The department also instructed educational institutions to closely monitor weather developments, review school sites at risk of flooding and landslides, and prepare plans to ensure the safety of students, teachers and school management staff.

Schools were also asked to proactively propose suspending classes when travel conditions or the organisation of teaching could not be carried out safely.
