PHÚ QUỐC — Phú Quốc International Airport will get a new runway and terminal to increase its capacity to 10 million passengers a year and 25,000 tonnes of cargo by 2030.
These are in a master plan for 2021-30, vision for 2050 approved by the Ministry of Construction.
The plan shows that the airport meets International Civil Aviation Organisation 4E standards and level two military standards, and serves both civilian and military purposes.
The upgrade aims to meet operational requirements for code E aircraft, support the APEC 2027 summit and enable long-haul international flights to Europe and the US.
It will also ensure there are 30 aircraft parking slots by 2030.
The existing runway will be lengthened to 3,500m. The proposed new runway will be 3,300m in length.
The existing parallel taxiway will be extended at both ends to match the extended runway by 2030.
The plan also includes new taxiways between the two runways, as well as rapid exit and connecting taxiways.
Until 2030 Terminal 1 will continue to serve domestic and international flights with a capacity of approximately four million passengers a year.
Terminal 2 will be built with a capacity of six million passengers year and land reserved for possible future expansion.
A VIP lounge will also be built to accommodate the delegates attending the 2027 APEC Leaders’ Week to be held in Phú Quốc.
Once the event concludes, this facility will be repurposed for international flights or general aviation.
By 2050 the airport's target is to handle 18 million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo, and have 45 parking slots. – VNS
