HÀ NỘI — Girl Takeover 2024, an initiative to empower young women to step into leadership roles and promote gender equality, was launched on Friday by the Embassy of Sweden and Plan International Việt Nam.

The launch aims to celebrate the International Day of the Girl.

Through this initiative, girls will take over key leadership positions for a day, symbolising their capacity to lead and influence the world around them.

Hà Anh, a 20-year-old law student in Hà Nội, had a chance to take over the role of the Swedish Ambassador to Việt Nam from Ambassador Johan Ndisi, experiencing what a day of an ambassador was like and participating in a meaningful discussion with the Ambassador over the topic of empowering girls and young women in leadership.

Girl Takeover 2024 showcased the incredible potential of girls and young women to lead and instigate positive change, she said.

“This platform gives us a voice to address challenges and advocate for meaningful solutions. We’re just getting started!” she said.

Swedish Ambassador Johan Ndisi emphasised Sweden’s strong commitment to gender equality that by supporting the next generation of female leaders, the initiative aimed to break down traditional gender norms.

“When a girl is empowered, she not only changes her own life but also uplifts her family and community,” he added.

He further said  that Sweden was ranked as the second most innovative country in the world, and good working conditions for women were key for this to be the case.

The Embassy of Sweden continues its dedication to fostering an inclusive future, empowering young leaders like Hà Anh to drive social change and promote gender equality.

Research shows that when young women are given the chance to realise their potential, they inspire others, create collective strength, and contribute to more resilient economies.

Migena Shulla, Country Director of Plan International Việt Nam, said “Empowering young people is essential for long-term, sustainable solutions.”

Initiatives like Girl Takeover amplified their voices and equipped them to effect real change.

“When girls are involved in decision-making, they bring unique perspectives that are crucial for creating a more equitable and resilient society.”

As ViệtNam faced rising climate challenges such as sea-level rise and natural disasters, the need for female leadership in climate resilience and sustainability was becoming increasingly urgent.

Women's participation in climate action had proven critical in helping communities adapt, mitigate risks, and thrived in the face of environmental changes.

Plan International continues to collaborate with partners and stakeholders to ensure that girls like Hà Anh not only have a seat at the table but also lead the way in addressing pressing global challenges, from gender inequality to climate change. — VNS
