HÀ NỘI — Chairman of the Party Commission for Internal Affairs Phan Đình Trạc on Thursday received a delegation from the United Left Movement Party (MIU) of the Dominican Republic, led by its General Secretary and Minister of Regional Integration Policies José Miguel Mejía Abreu.

On behalf of the Party, State, and people of Việt Nam, Trạc warmly welcomed Miguel Mejía and the MIU delegation back to Việt Nam to attend celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (September 2).

He expressed deep gratitude to the people and progressive parties of Latin America, including the Dominican Republic, for their solidarity and support for Việt Nam’s struggle for independence and reunification in the past as well as for its process of renewal, development and defence today.

Trạc, who also served as a member of the Politburo and the Party Secretariat, said that the 1945 August Revolution marked the birth of the Democratic Republic of Việt Nam, turning the Vietnamese people into masters of their nation and the CPV from a clandestine movement into a ruling party. This victory opened a new era of independence linked with socialism, while inspiring national liberation movements worldwide.

Over the past 80 years since the country’s founding, 50 years of reunification, and nearly 40 years of Đổi mới (Renewal), Việt Nam has overcome challenges to achieve historic, comprehensive progress in all fields under the CPV’s leadership, he said.

Trạc reaffirmed Việt Nam’s consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation, and development; diversification and multilateralisation of foreign relations; and being a reliable partner and active, responsible member of the international community.

The senior CPV official expressed appreciation for Miguel Mejía’s steadfast friendship with Việt Nam for nearly three decades, noting that thanks to his support, relations between the two Parties and countries have expanded, helping the CPV deepen its relations across Latin America.

He hoped both sides will continue to preserve and promote symbolic projects such as the statue and park dedicated to late President Hồ Chí Minh in Santo Domingo, and the monument to Professor Juan Bosch – a revered Dominican leader – at Hà Nội’s Hòa Bình Park, which stand as vivid symbols of bilateral solidarity.

Looking ahead, Trạc proposed several measures to strengthen ties between the CPV and MIU, as well as between Việt Nam and the Dominican Republic. These include maintaining regular contacts and effectively implementing the 2023-2028 cooperation agreement; promoting high-level visits; and boosting negotiations and agreements on trade, investment, agriculture, tourism, and legal frameworks for long-term cooperation.

Trạc urged the MIU to continue serving as a bridge for Vietnamese enterprises to explore investment opportunities in the Dominican Republic and Latin America.

He also called for closer cooperation in external communications to promote the legacy of President Hồ Chí Minh in Latin America, while supporting the CPV’s engagement with regional parties and multilateral forums.

For his part, Miguel Mejía expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from the CPV and Việt Nam’s leaders, extending congratulations on the successful celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.

The MIU General Secretary said he was impressed by the patriotic spirit and joy of the Vietnamese people and expressed his admiration for Việt Nam’s heroic struggle for independence, the revered legacy of President Hồ Chí Minh, and the nation’s remarkable achievements over nearly 40 years of Đổi mới.

Miguel Mejía also shared views on global and regional economic-security developments affecting Latin America and the Dominican Republic.

He voiced interest in learning from Việt Nam’s development and integration experience and affirmed his determination to foster stronger business links between the two countries, contributing to the effectiveness of bilateral cooperation in the years ahead. — VNS
