HÀ NỘI — With 458 votes of approval from 461 deputies, of 95.62% of the total, the 15th National Assembly (NA) on November 30 adopted a resolution on the establishment of centrally-run Huế city.
Under the resolution, which will come into effect from January 1, 2025, the centrally-run city will be based on the entire natural area of 4,947.11 sq.km and a population of 1,236,393 from the central province of Thừa Thiên-Huế.
The National Assembly tasked the NA Standing Committee with determining the arrangement and establishment of district and commune-level administrative units within Huế city, ensuring that these changes take effect simultaneously with the resolution. Agencies, organisations, and units whose names are tied to the province of Thừa Thiên-Huế will be renamed to reflect the city’s new status.
The establishment of centrally-run Huế city will be a driving force for the Government, Party committees and local authorities to implement approved urban development plans and programmes, with specific investment and development directions and plans to enhance urban quality, fast, strong and sustainable urban economic growth, thereby gradually increasing per-capita income and other development indicators in the city. — VNS
