Vietnamese film wins two prizes at 58th Asia Pacific Film Festival

Feature film Đảo Của Dân Ngụ Cư (The Island of Aliens or The Way Station) by director Nguyễn Hồng Ánh has been honored with the Best Story award at the 58th Asia Pacific Film Festival.

HÀ NỘI — Feature film Đảo Của Dân Ngụ Cư (The Island of Aliens or The Way Station) by director Nguyễn Hồng Ánh has been honoured with the Best Story award at the 58th Asia Pacific Film Festival.

Actress Ngọc Thanh Tâm, 25, who played the lead role in the film, also grabbed the Special Jury Award for Best Actress.

Another Vietnamese film Cô Ba Sài Gòn (Miss Saigon) by directors Trần Bửu Lộc and Kay Nguyễn won the Best Costume award.

The festival was held in Taipei, Taiwan (China) from August 31 to September 1.

This year the Vietnamese movie industry presented five movies at the festival, including Cô Ba Sài Gòn, Đảo Của Dân Ngụ Cư, Cô Gái Đến Từ Hôm Qua (The Girl from Yesterday) by director Phan Gia Nhật Linh, Khi Con Là Nhà (When You’re Home) by director Vũ Ngọc Đãng and Em Chưa 18 (Jailbait) directed by Lê Thanh Sơn.

Đảo của Dân Ngụ Cư was honoured with the Special Jury Prize at the Eurasia International Film Festival 2017.

It was also honored with the "Best Film” Award, “Best Actor” for Phạm Hồng Phước and “Best Director of Photography” for People’s Artists Lý Thái Dũng at the ASEAN International Film Festival & Awards (AIFFA Award) 2017 in Malaysia. It also was screened on the Vietnam Night at the 70th Cannes Film Festival and during a Vietnamese movie week in Spain in May 2017.

The movie is adapted from writer Đỗ Phước Tiến’s story titled Đảo Của Dân Ngụ Cư (The Island of Aliens) depicting the confusion and uncertainty of the characters on their journey to look for happiness and the meaning of life.  — VNS
