HCM CITY – The HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) will present contemporary music and dance performances by international and Vietnamese musicians and choreographers at the city’s Opera House on July 9.

Featured will be Giai Điệu Các Dân Tộc Thiểu Số Tây Bắc (Melody of Ethnic Minorities from Northwest) from Vietnamese composer and pianist Đặng Hữu Phúc’s great work Tám Khúc Giao Hưởng Từ Dân Ca Việt Nam (Eight Symphonic Pieces from Vietnamese Folk).

Phúc, 63, a graduate of Hà Nội Conservatory, is best known for his film scores. He has written over 60 works, primarily for film and theatre.

He has won several top prizes for film scores at national and international film festivals.

The performance will also feature extracts from contemporary compositions, including Albanian Suite by Albanian composer David Tukici, Giao Hưởng Số 1 (Symphony No 1) by Lưu Quang Minh, and Overture “Cold Desire” by Nguyễn Mạnh Duy Linh.

All works will be performed by the HBSO Symphony Orchestra led by veteran conductor Trần Nhật Minh, director of HBSO.

The second part of the programme will highlight contemporary dance piece Gone Through Love by choreographers Nguyễn Phúc Hải and Nguyễn Phúc Hùng.

Choreographer and ballet dancer Hải, head of the HBSO Ballet, has choreographed and performed many dance pieces, including Anh Em (Brother), Zig Zag, Chuyển (Motion), and Chạm Tay Vào Quá Khứ (Touching the Past).

Hùng, a graduate in choreography from Fontys Dance Academy in the Netherlands, is general director in charge of HBSO’s programmes.

Both choreographers presented their first dance piece Những Mảnh Ghép Của Giấc Mơ (Dream Puzzles) in 2012 which received a warm welcome from local and foreign audiences.

The dance performance will feature young dancer Trần Hoàng Yến, a graduate of the HCM City Dance School. She has taken part in several dance festivals in Việt Nam and other countries like South Korea and China.

She has performed as soloist in HBSO’s many ballet and contemporary dance pieces such as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Những Mảnh Ghép Của Giấc Mơ.

Yến will perform along with young dancers like Nguyễn Thu Trang, Phan Tiểu Ly and Sùng A Lùng.

The performance will begin at 8pm at 7 Lam Sơn Square, District 1. Tickets are VNĐ200,000 to VNĐ550,000 (US$9-25). They are available at www.hbso.org.vn. VNS
