More than a natural spectacle, the plum blossom season in northwest Việt Nam marks a moment of quiet renewal. As white flowers blanket mountains and villages, they signal new beginnings, ancestral beliefs and a fragile beauty that exists only for those who arrive in time.

During this time of year, the mountains and forests of northwest Việt Nam are adorned with the white blossoms of plum trees, creating a poetic and breathtaking landscape. Unlike the flamboyant colours of peach or bauhinia flowers, northwest plum blossoms embody a quiet, restrained and simple beauty.

Amidst the biting cold of winter, the slender tree branches burst into vibrant life. From tiny buds, individual white petals unfurl, covering the mountain slopes, weaving into the valleys, and reflecting softly in the streams.

This is referred to as the so-called "white season" for northwest Việt Nam, a time of faith marked by the Lunar New Year and new beginnings. For generations, plum trees have been integral to the lives of the Tày, Mông and Dao ethnic people. They plant these trees around their homes, beside stone fences, and on high hillsides - not only for beautification but to express hopes for peace and well-being.

When the plum blossoms bloom, villages seem to light up with joy. Under the plum trees, children's laughter echoes, and the smoke from evening cooking fires mingles with the fragrance of the blossoms.

The plum blossom season is also a time for festivals, drawing tourists to the region. Visitors come not only to admire the flowers but also to experience the essence of the mountains and forests, and to connect with the simplicity and sincerity of the locals.

In northwest Việt Nam, the plum blossom season typically spans from late January to early March, though each area has its own distinct timing. In Mộc Châu, for instance, the flowers bloom early, while Sa Pa and Bắc Hà wait until the end of February to burst into white blossoms.
