HÀ NỘI — The Military Industry-Telecoms Group (Viettel) has officially won the right to use three radio spectrum bands and will soon build a network to provide advanced telecommunications services in the Dominican Republic, making the Caribbean nation Viettel’s third market in the Americas.
According to Resolution No 073-2026 dated August 19, 2026, issued by the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL), Viettel Global JSC (VGI), a Viettel subsidiary, has won the right to use 240 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz, 2,300 MHz and C-Band frequencies for 4G/5G mobile networks for a 20-year term.
The Dominican Government expects Viettel’s entry to bring a major transformation to the country’s telecommunications sector.
Guido Gómez Mazara, chairman of INDOTEL’s Board of Directors, said: “Our goal is to provide people in the Dominican Republic with superior telecommunications services, increase competition in the market and, most importantly, optimise costs for consumers.”
Within the next 90 days, Viettel Global will complete procedures to establish a legal entity in the Dominican Republic and sign an official concession agreement with INDOTEL. Once operations begin, the Dominican Republic will become the 11th international market in which Viettel has invested and operated telecommunications services.
Lieutenant General Tào Đức Thắng, member of the Party Central Committee and chairman and general director of Viettel, said winning the bid marked a new step in the group’s international expansion.
“With more than 20 years of successful international business experience, Viettel is pursuing a long-term investment model focused on building modern infrastructure, introducing new technologies to the market and creating sustainable value for people, businesses and the local economy,” he said.
“The Dominican Republic is also an important market for Viettel’s next growth cycle and will help our overseas investment business make an increasingly significant contribution to the group’s overall growth.”
Located in the heart of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is the region’s second-largest economy, with per capita income of about US$11,000. Its dynamic economy, open investment environment and rapidly growing demand for digital services and high-speed mobile data provide significant room for the development of advanced telecommunications technologies.
Viettel currently operates telecommunications businesses in 10 international markets and holds the leading market share in seven of them. In 2025, revenue from its overseas markets reached $3.34 billion, up 23.9 per cent, marking the ninth consecutive year of double-digit growth and accounting for more than 40 per cent of Viettel’s overall growth.
Viettel’s international operations were also recognised at the US-based International Business Awards 2026, announced last week. The group won more awards than any of the 3,800 participating businesses worldwide, with 21 of its 30 awards recognising achievements in overseas markets.
In the Dominican Republic, Viettel plans to build advanced telecommunications infrastructure on a large scale, extending coverage to remote and underserved areas, expanding access to connectivity services and gradually developing a digital services ecosystem tailored to the needs of local people, businesses and organisations. — VNS
