HÀ NỘI — Payment accounts have been used for a wide range of everyday needs, from receiving salaries and making transfers to paying bills and shopping. Yet some funds set aside for emergencies or future expenses can sit in an account for days without generating additional value.

To address this, Saigon – Hanoi Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SHB) has introduced Sinh lời nhàn tênh (Effortless Earnings) on its SHB SAHA digital banking platform. Customers only need to activate the feature once and set a minimum balance to maintain. Any funds above that threshold are then automatically allocated to generate returns, while customers can continue to use their account for everyday spending and payments.

Many people keep a buffer in their payment accounts to cover unexpected expenses. For office workers, it may be part of the household budget; for business owners, it may be working capital reserved for inventory purchases or payments to partners. Customers with larger financial reserves may also maintain additional balances to take advantage of investment opportunities or meet unforeseen expenses.

In practice, these funds may not be needed immediately. Effortless Earnings is designed to help customers put such money to work without requiring them to constantly monitor their balance or move funds manually.

Once the feature is activated on SHB SAHA, customers select the payment account they wish to use and set the balance they want to maintain based on their individual needs. When the account balance exceeds that threshold, the system automatically processes the excess funds to generate returns.

This means customers do not need to time deposits and withdrawals or manually calculate how much money can be set aside.

Linh Anh, an office worker in Hà Nội, said she previously kept a sum of money in her account for household expenses and unexpected costs.

“The money would stay in my account, sometimes for an entire week, without being used. I never really thought about how it could generate additional value. With Effortless Earnings, I only needed to activate the feature once on SHB SAHA, and my money could start earning without any further monitoring or manual action,” she said.

Rather than transferring excess funds to another product whenever they have surplus cash, customers only need to set their preferences once on the app. The system then monitors the account balance and operates according to the chosen threshold. Customers can earn returns of up to 6 per cent per year.

For busy customers, the benefit is particularly straightforward: their money can be put to better use without adding to the time they spend managing their finances. They can focus on work, business or personal matters while the system handles their unused funds in the background.

From a single feature to a broader digital financial ecosystem

Effortless Earnings expands the way customers can use their payment accounts while reflecting a broader shift in digital banking – from simply executing customer instructions to proactively supporting customers in managing their money.

Instead of regularly checking their balance and manually transferring unused funds into another product, customers can set their preferences once and let the system operate automatically according to their chosen threshold.

The entire process, from activation and setting the minimum balance to monitoring returns and transaction history, is carried out digitally on SHB SAHA. Bringing these functions together in a seamless digital journey reduces paperwork, saves time and gives customers greater control over their finances.

The feature is part of SHB’s broader transformation strategy, which places customers and the market at the centre, people as the key drivers and technology modernisation and digital transformation at the heart of the bank’s development.

Based on customers’ everyday needs, SHB is gradually bringing financial management tools together on a single platform, with the aim of building a digital ecosystem that is more convenient, flexible and user-friendly.

As part of this transformation, SHB is pursuing its 'Five First' technology strategy: Data and AI First, People First, Cloud First, Security First and Mobile First. The strategy provides a foundation for strengthening the bank’s data capabilities, modernising its infrastructure, enhancing security and developing mobile-first customer experiences.

SHB SAHA is an important digital touchpoint between the bank and its customers. The addition of services such as Effortless Earnings can turn receiving money, making payments, managing balances and optimising cash flows into a more integrated experience, helping the app evolve from a transaction tool into a platform for everyday financial management.

With its vision of becoming a new-generation bank of national stature, SHB aims to develop smart, secure digital financial solutions that meet customers’ increasingly diverse needs. — VNS
