Tarot card reading has emerged as an affordable source of healing and purification, increasingly viewed as a "spiritual nourishment" for many young Vietnamese people.

Originating in mid-15th century Italy, the Tarot deck consists of 78 cards, each featuring unique symbolic imagery. In Việt Nam, Tarot has recently gained popularity as a form of "spiritual therapy". Many turn to Tarot for guidance and insight into their futures, seeking solace from life's challenges.

In modern times, Tarot is used for a plethora of purposes, including fortune-telling, self-discovery, and spiritual healing. Readers interpret the cards' symbolism to offer insights into personal questions or situations, often providing guidance on relationships, career, and personal development. Although Tarot is sometimes viewed as mystical, many people use it as a psychological tool to reflect on life choices and challenges.

With growing interest in Tarot, social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram are now filled with posts, fan pages, and groups promoting this mystical art.

Tarot services are priced attractively, ranging from VNĐ10,000 to 50,000 per question, and VNĐ200,000 to 300,000 for an hour-long session. Readings are offered in various formats, including in-person sessions, live streams, video chats, and even text messages.

One popular fan page, "See Tarot", boosts its credibility by offering refunds if the energy is misaligned or if the reading proves inaccurate. It promotes an experienced Tarot reader and offers continued support even after the session ends.

The Tarot community in Việt Nam is predominantly made up of young people, including students and professionals, who seek spiritual comfort through these readings.

Gen Z has particularly embraced Tarot, frequently asking questions about their uncertain futures, such as "Will I marry a wealthy partner?" or "What will my job be like?" This trend reflects a desire for reassurance in an unpredictable world.

Benefits of Tarot reading

Tarot reading offers several positive aspects. It is said to help individuals regain a sense of calm and emotional balance, providing a sense of control over their lives. By exploring personal challenges through the cards, readers can gain insights into their situations, making Tarot a form of therapeutic stress relief.

Tarot can also help users identify their strengths and weaknesses. Although the cards are drawn randomly, their meanings often resonate with the individual, fostering self-awareness and personal growth. Many find that Tarot readings offer predictions for the next three to six months, guiding them through upcoming challenges.

However, the effectiveness of these predictions largely depends on the individual’s actions. Whether the outcome is favourable or not ultimately hinges on the choices made after the reading.

The dark side

Despite its benefits, over-reliance on Tarot can lead to negative consequences. Some young people may develop an unhealthy dependence on these readings, viewing them as the sole solution to their problems. This can weaken critical thinking, decision-making skills, and personal confidence.

There are also risks of exploitation. Some individuals may take advantage of others' vulnerabilities, leading to financial loss without providing meaningful guidance. Unscrupulous readers may even push clients towards superstitious practices, further worsening their financial and emotional distress.

"I’m introverted and don’t often confide in others. Learning about Tarot allowed me to express my frustrations and receive advice that felt personally relevant," Thanh Trúc from Hà Nội said.

Conversely, Huy Hoàng, also from Hà Nội, said: "While I recognise the psychological benefits of Tarot, I don’t believe in its accuracy. It’s crucial not to let it manipulate you."

Psychologist Võ Hồng Tâm explained the allure of Tarot for young people: "Today’s Gen Z faces numerous psychological challenges but often avoids seeking professional help due to stigma or cost. Instead, they turn to Tarot as a low-cost, low-effort alternative that satisfies their desire for control over the future."

While Tarot can provide immediate answers to doubts, excessive reliance on it is like consulting an unqualified doctor for treatment. Though it may be seen as "spiritual food", young people must remain vigilant against the dangers of superstition and ensure that their life decisions are not unduly influenced by Tarot readers.

In conclusion, while Tarot readings offer comfort and insight, it is important to approach them with a critical mindset. Striking a balance between seeking guidance and maintaining personal agency is key to navigating the complexities of life. VNS
