HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s women football team have risen two places to 32nd in the latest FIFA world rankings, according to the Việt Nam Football Federation.

The Vietnamese women’s football team are the strongest in Southeast Asia after becoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games champions, beating Thailand 1-0 in final in the Philippines.

They rank sixth in Asia with 1,665 points behind Australia (seventh), Japan (10th), North Korea (11th), China (15th) and South Korea (20th).

In Southeast Asia, Việt Nam rank top, followed by Thailand who are now 38th in the world.

The US, Germany and Netherlands respectively remain the top three.

After the 30th SEA Games, which concluded in the Philippines on December 11, Việt Nam's female team will head to Jeju, South Korea to play in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020 Asian qualifying round which will get underway between February 3 and February 9, 2020.

Việt Nam are in Group A alongside North Korea, South Korea and Myanmar. Group B consists of Australia, China, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei.

The two leading teams from each group will progress to the next round where they will play a two-legged playoff to determine the two teams that will represent Asia in the women's football at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, alongside hosts Japan. — VNS
