HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Tiến Minh defeated top seed Misha Zilberma to win the Lagos International Badminton Classics, which ended in Lagos, Nigeria over the weekend.

The top Vietnamese player and former world number five won four matches for a slot in the final where he met Zilberma of Israel, who lost to Minh eight years ago in the world championship.

Zilberma, world number 40, was considered a stronger player because he was higher in the world ranking. But Minh, world number 59, shower more experience in the decisive moments, helping him win 21-18, 25-23.

It is his third international title in four months. The first two were from events in New Zealand in April. This is his first title in a challenge-level tournament in two years.

Minh's wife Vũ Thị Trang was the number five seed in the women's singles category but she was eliminated in the quarter-finals. — VNS
