HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese pair Đỗ Tuấn Đức and Phạm Như Thảo are through to the quarter-finals of the Austrian Open badminton tournament in Vienna.

The No 1 seeds yesterday defeated Supak Jomko and Supissara Paeksampran of Thailand 21-18, 21-19 in the second round match of the mixed doubles.

They will next play  Singaporean pair Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Tan Wei Han who sent No 5 seeds Jacco Arends and Cheryl Seinen of the Netherlands home after an easy win of 21-13, 21-9.

Đức and Thảo are the only Vietnamese representatives left in the tournament after their teammate Nguyễn Thùy Linh was ousted in the first round on Thursday.

The Austrian Open part of the BWF International Series which offers US$25,000 to the winners.

Also in badminton news, Đinh Thị Phương Hồng and Phạm Thị Khánh were stopped at the Beer Lao International Series in Vientiane yesterday.

The unseeded women let Thailand’s Chasinee Korepap amd Kwanchanok Sudjaipraparat, the No 2 seeds, come from behind to win 21-18, 8-21, 13-21.

Earlier, their teammates in the men’s and women’s singles and doubles were knocked out.

The Vientiane event will close on Sunday with $10,000 for the top players. — VNS
